Hoax bus bomber jailed for breaching terrorist notification requirements

A convicted terrorist has been sentenced to four years in prison for five breaches of notification requirements as he failed to tell counter-terrorism police his mobile number and bank account details.

Nicholas Roddis, 37, formerly of Eastwood, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing ammunition and was found guilty of stalking in previous trials.

He has a lifetime ban of gun ownership after he was sentenced to jail for seven years for leaving a fake bomb consisting of a bag of sugar wrapped with a clock and wires in a bus in 2008.

At Sheffield Crown Court on Friday, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, the Recorder of Sheffield, said: ”The pre-sentence report fills me with no confidence whatsoever because of your lack of respect for the law and any appreciation of the serious nature of conduct.

“Public safety is front and centre in consideration. I have very little reason to believe you will not carry out further offences.”

Police recovered 50 9mm blank cartridges, 48 8mm blank cartridges and 56 350mm rim cartridges at his home kitchen in June 2021 and May 2022.

Roddis, who suffers from autism, depression and anxiety, used a bogus name and told police fake stories during an interview after his arrest, the court was told.

A magistrates’ court also ruled Roddis harassed a 17-year-old shop employee in Rotherham between October 2021 and May 2022 by following her around the aisles in the evenings to "stare at her in a menacing fashion".

A restraining order was issued banning him from contacting the worker indefinitely.

He will serve three years for breach of notification requirements, three months for stalking and today the court revoked his previous suspended sentence.

Judge Richardson QC told Roddis: “Although you don’t have intention to use the ammo for crime, I cannot ignore the past even when they were blank cartridges.

“The principle of totality is reflective in today’s ruling. The punishment is fair, just and proportionate because of the volume of offending and your disregard of law.”
